StorCenter

NAS Storage in Desktop and Rackmount for SMBs

Iomega's StorCenter product line consists of network hard drives and NAS gear primarily for home users, small offices, and SMBs. The network hard drives are all desktop-format offerings, while the StorCenter Pro NAS Server offerings are mostly rack-mount formats (the 200D and 250D being the exceptions).

The StorCenter Network Hard Drives are desktop format enclosures that attach to the network via Ethernet connections (10/100/1000) and provide storage to local PCs through their network connections. Each can also serve as an A/V Media Server, with the ability to stream digital content to UPnP-compliant Digital Media Adapters without requiring an intermediate/bridging PC. Additionally, each Network Hard Drive includes dual USB ports allowing for the attachment of additional external storage or a network printer; and a Gigabit (10/100/1000) Ethernet port. Currently available Network Hard Drives include 500GB, 750GB and 1TB flavors.

For SMBs, the vendor offers the 150D, 200rl, 400R, and 450R series of StorCenter Pro NAS servers; the "R" versions offered in rackmount form factors and the "D" versions featuring desktop enclosures. All but the 150D are based on and include Windows Storage Server 2003 (the 150D utilizes an embedded Linux kernel). Additionally, each of these offerings is a multi-disk enclosure with RAID support (0, 1, or 5; depending on model).

A sampling of the available StorCenter PRO NAS servers includes:

- The 250D series of StorCenters are offered in capacities of 500GB, 750GB, and 1.5TB. The 500GB box, in particular, is additionally offered in a flavor that includes a built in 70 GB REV drive. The higher end boxes (750/1.5), on the other hand, will include Windows Print Server capabilities, with support for up to 5 printers. Each of the 250D units features hot swappable SATA II drives.

- The 400R series is offered in 1TB and 2TB capacities; includes 4 hot swappable SATA disks with RAID 0, 1, and 5 support; and includes 2 10/100/1000 ports (teaming and load balancing), 2 USB ports and a PCI Ultra 320 SCSI Connector for external expansion. The 400E series of appliances is also available as 1 TB expansion chassis for use with the 400R.

The latest addition to the StorCenter line is the ix2 model for SMB and home office environments. Available in 1 TB and 2 TB capacities, this compact desktop model ships bundled with EMC LifeLine storage management software and RSA virus scanning.

StorCenter ix2 offers Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and two USB ports that can be used to expand storage or enable network print sharing. ix2 can also form the storage component of a video surveillance system and provide real-time viewing and recording with a compatible Axis camera.
