V-Switch

Pools Diverse Storage Arrays for iSCSI Access

SANRAD's primary product offering is their V-Switch series of devices, which are targeted to small to large-sized organizations and facilitate the creation and management of IP SANs: The pooling of diverse storage resources (including FC, SCSI, and iSCSI connected arrays with differing disk configurations) and the providing of those pooled resources to hosts via iSCSI connections. Each of the switches provides FC or SCSI ports for connectivity to the storage resources themselves; while Gb Ethernet ports enable connectivity to the host computers.

Each of the devices are managed via the vendor's embedded StoragePro management tools (a CLI is also available via SSH), featuring capabilities including support for customized, virtualized volumes that can span differing storage resources, and volume expansion. Active/active configurations are possible with automatic failover, failback and multipathing support included.

Three primary devices are available from the vendor, each of which support up to 200 servers and 51,200 volumes; with a maximum volume size of 64 TB:

- V-Switch 2000: With a maximum managed storage capacity of 2,048 TB (2 PB). The V-Switch 2000 includes 2 iSCSI ports (Gb Ethernet) and the user's choice of 2 FC or 2 SCSI ports for storage.

- V-Switch 3440: Replaces the previously available 3400 and lists a maximum managed storage capacity of 4,096 TB (4 PB). The V-Switch 3400 includes 3 iSCSI ports: A 1000BaseT Copper port, and 2 SFP ports (1 Base-SX and 1 Base-LX) for networking; and four 4 Gb/sec FC ports for storage supporting L, N or NL configurations.

- V-Switch 3840: Replaces the previously available 3800 and lists a maximum managed storage capacity of 8,192 TB (8 PB). Network ports are the same as in the V-Switch 3440, with storage ports expanding to eight 4 Gb/sec FC ports supporting L, N or NL configurations.

The 3440 and 3840 additionally support redundant hot-swappable power supplies.

Other features of the platform include support for Access Control Lists and iSCSI login authentication (CHAP, SRP); and the vendor's optional Global Data Replication (or Global Disaster Recovery) software that provides features such as remote replication (synchronous or asynchronous), many to one replication, failover and failback, and the ability to select volumes for replication.

V-Switch is available now. The new 3440/3840 models are expected to be available in April and June 2008 (respectively); pricing is listed at $29,000 for the V-3440, and $44,750 for the V-3840.
