DataGuard rf

RFID-Based Tape Tracking Platform

DataGuard rf is an RFID-based tape tracking platform consisting of a handheld scanner, RFID labels, and transport cases for the physical movement of tapes. At the original release, the product additionally included hardware scanners loaded with tape management software from B&L Associates. The most recent release of the product, however, sheds those components and instead adopts an "open" system on the handheld reader with the ability to work with "... any tape management platform." The platform enables IT personnel to scan tapes--either individually, or within 20-cartridge transport cases--for auditing or location tracking purposes.

Individual components of the DataGuard rf platform include:

- DataGuard rf Handheld Reader: The handheld reader is in fact a Motorola 9090G pre-loaded with the vendor's custom scanning software (which in turn features the open API for integration with the customer's existing tape management system). Connectivity to (communications with) the customer's existing tape management system is via a physical mobile docking station, or Wi-Fi tranmissions.

The handheld reader can read the vendor's RFID-Volser labels (more below) or standard bar codes; the former enabling the reader to scan the full contents of a storage case (up to 20 tapes) without opening it.

- Combined RFID/Volser labels, which can include both the RFID tag and volume/serial number identifications. Features of the most recently offered labels include an embedded RFID chip and antenna allowing for single tape scans at up to 2 feet away or full case scans at up to 2 feet using UHF technology. Labels can be read straight on and at angles of up to 45 degrees.

The vendor notes the RFID tracking capability can also be integrated into EDP labels.

- Transport/Storage cases: Specially designed shock-resistant cases with interchangeable inserts accommodating differing tape formats (LTO, DLT, 3590, 3592, 9x40 or T10000). Up to 20 tapes can be transported in a single case.

DataGuard rf is available now, with base pricing of $7,900 (includes the reader, software, and labels--transport case sold separately).
