RangeBooster

Wireless Router and NICs For 802.11g, Draft 802.11n

The RangeBooster line includes both 802.11g gear as well as Draft 802.11n equipment primarily for home or SOHO uses.

The gear includes both routers, providing a gateway between wireless PCs and a DSL/Cable modem, and wireless interface cards for both desktop and notebook Windows PCs in internal (PCI), Cardbus, and USB flavors. Two primary lines are listed: RangeBooster N and RangeBooster G.

The RangeBooster N product line boasts a pair of routers and a quartet of NIC options; including the DWA-542 (PCI card), the DWA-642 (Cardbus card), the DWA-140 (a USB dongle), and the DWA-142 (a USB connected adapter). The routers both support 802.11n (draft 2.0) and 802.11g communications, and include the DIR-625, which boasts 4 10/100 ports, and the dual-band DIR-628, which also includes 4 10/100 ports and additionally supports 802.11a communications (the user can select to communicate in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands depending on their needs). Both routers support WPA/WPA2 security, NAT, and management via Java-enabled browsers.

Newly announced by the vendor is support for "SharePort" technology in the DIR-625 router. SharePort (also available in the DIR-628) enables the USB port of the router to be used for the network sharing of USB gear (i.e., printers, storage, cams, etc.). I.E., with SharePort, devices plugged into the USB port of the router can be accessed from other machines on the network.

Also available from the vendor in the RangeBooster line are the RangeBooster G line of offerings, including the WBR-2310 (router), WDA-2320, WNA-2330, and WUA-2340 (PCI, Cardbus, and USB adapters, respectively), and the DPR-1260, a wireless print server allowing for the sharing of up to 4 standard or multi-function printers over a wireless connection. The RangeBooster G line supports 802.11g connectivity with backward compatibility to 802.11b.

The RangeBooster offerings are available now. The SharePort upgrade for the DIR-625 is free (a firmware upgrade available from the vendor's support site); pricing for the DIR-625 is about $120.
