JoikuSpot

Internet Connection Sharing Through Smartphone

JoikuSpot enables you to use your 3G, Internet-capable phone as a hotspot; that is, it allows you to share the phone's Internet data connection via WiFi with any 802.11 enabled client, including laptops, iTouch, etc. The product is software, and is designed to run on Symbian S60 v3 based phones with an Internet data plan (through the cellular provider) and support for WiFi communications. Among the phones specifically listed by the vendor as compatible with the software are the Samsung i550/G810, and multiple flavors in the Nokia N and E Series (N95, N93, E90, etc.). No additional hardware/software beyond these requirements is necessary. Both GPRS and 3G cellular networks are supported; though the vendor does note that with GPRS, data connections and actual phone calls cannot be processed at the same time.

After installation and execution of the program on the phone, WiFi enabled devices can share the phone's Internet connection by connecting to the phone in ad-hoc (three potential channels) networking mode (WLAN-based connections to the phone are not supported as of this writing). According to the vendor, the software provides the operator with the ability to control who can share the Internet access over the phone, and multiple devices can share the Internet access concurrently. Encryption settings can also be set for protected communications.

Two primary flavors of the software are now offered.

JoikuSpot Light is a free product that supports only HTTP and HTTPS communications between the WiFi devices and the phone. When connecting, users are forced to the joikuspot.com landing page.

JoikuSpot Premium is the new "business class" version of the software, with support for all Internet communication protocols (E-mail, IM, Skype, etc.) and no landing page requirements. JoikuSpot Premium additionally supports VPN connectivity (over ICMP, TCP and UDP protocols; VPN connections with the PPTP/GRE protocol are not supported) and offers branding support.

JoikuSpot Light and Premium are available now; the Premium version currently lists for about $24 (regular price is about $40).
