Bluefire Mobile Defender

Stand Alone Security Software for Handhelds

Bluefire Mobile Defender is security software specifically designed for use in mobile devices, including those based on Windows Mobile 5/6 (the vendor states that other plaforms will be added after the initial release). While the vendor's other core product offerings (Mobile Security Enterprise, Mobile Security VPN) are targeted primarily to Enterprise-level deployments; Bluefire Mobile Defender is instead targeted to OEMs or providers who would embed/bundle the software with their devices or services and in turn target the software to consumers or individual and mobile business users. The application is stand alone in that it does not require connectivity to a central DB or server-based updates for functionality; and the vendor states that it has a less than 1MB footprint and has been optimized to minimize battery usage. Support is included for CDMA, EV-DO, GPRS, EDGE, HSPDA, UMTS and WLAN networks.

Key features include:

- A stateful firewall that filters both inbound and outbound traffic and blocks spoofing, redirection, unauthorized connections, hijacking, and "malware-generated networking and data transfers from the device"

- Behavioral anti-virus protection that prevents certain malicious behaviors such as worm or virus propagation. Malicious code is additionally quarantined and removed where possible

- Application/installation blocking and integrity monitoring

- Intrusion prevention capabilities that identify/block multi-packet attacks and other intrusions

- SMS/MMS message control features that allow users to setup their own whitelists/blacklists by user and caller ID

- A remote device wipe feature that enables a user to erase all personal information on the device (call history, Web browser history, contacts, text messages, picture, audio and video) in the event the handheld is lost or stolen. This feature is activated by the user sending an SMS command to the device

Bluefire Mobile Defender is now available for Windows Mobile 5/6, with other platforms to follow. Contact the vendor for further information.
