MOTOMESH

Single, Dual, Quad Radio Gear for Metro Wireless Deployments

Motorola's MOTOMESH line of products consists of single, dual, and quad radio gear that enable the deployment of mesh-based wireless access especially in metropolitan areas.

In a typical MOTOMESH deployment, an Internet signal is transmitted from an MiSC system via wires to an Intelligent Access Point (IAP), which can be mounted on rooftops, street lamps, etc. The IAP, in turn, distributes the signal wirelessly to one or more Mesh Wireless Routers (MWRs), with automatic configuration, discovery and routing features enabling them to bounce the signals from router to router until they reach their ultimate destinations. Wireless modem cards in the end user devices facilitate connectivity to the mesh network.

Other potential components in a MOTOMESH network include an Enhanced Wireless Router (EWR), which serves both as an MWR and a direct connection point (via an RJ45 connector) for a wired device, such as a camera; a vehicle mounted modem and a portable wireless router (also with RJ45 connections); the vendor's MeshManager Element Management System (EMS), a Java based GUI running on a series of software servers (the vendor states that off-the-shelf servers will do) for municipal administrators that enables them to perform configuration, performance monitoring, and security management tasks for the mesh network as a whole; MeshTrack, a location tracking system based on deployed portable devices; and MeshPlanner, mesh network design software assisting in the optimization and planning of a mesh deployment based on the MOTOMESH Duo offering (see below).

Multiple flavors of the MOTOMESH platform are offered, including:

- MOTOMESH Solo, a single radio, 2.4 GHz platform driven by the vendor's QDMA-based MEA (Mobility Enabled Access, or Mesh Enabled Architecture) radio technology. A key feature of the MEA technology is support for position location/navigation services.

- MOTOMESH Quattro, a four radio design with dual 2.4 GHz radios and dual 4.9 GHz radios. Each of the radio pairs are further divided into 802.11 and MEA (see above) based offerings; allowing the same hardware mesh infrastructure to serve both the general public and public safety officials.

- MOTOMESH Duo, formerly known as HotZone Duo and offered as part of the vendor's Canopy line of wireless deployment gear. The MOTOMESH Duo is a two radio offering, one of which is a 2.4 GHz radio dedicated to 802.11 b/g access, while the other radio can now operate at 4.9, 5.4, or 5.8 GHz for dedicated 802.11a backhaul processing.
