Storage Networking , Part 1
eBook: A storage network is any network that's designed to transport block-level storage protocols. But understanding the ins and outs of networked storage takes you deep into several of protocols. This guide covers SANs, Fibre Channels, Disk Arrays, Fabric, and IP Storage. »

Storage Networking 2, Configuration and Planning
eBook: Picking up where Part 1 left off, Part 2 of our look at storage networking examines configurations for SAN-attached servers and disk arrays, and also includes a look at the future of IP storage. »

Storage Management Costs in the Enterprise: A Comparison of Mid-Range Array Solutions
Whitepaper: Many factors contribute to the ownership cost for enterprise storage. These include (but are not limited to): physical capacity relative to physical space requirements, performance capacity for data transfer and system reaction time, software maintenance and updates, expandability and flexibility, and much more. »

Storage Is Changing Fast Be Ready or Be Left Behind

Capacity Bottleneck Analyzer Virtual Appliance

Monitors CPU, Memory, and Storage Capacity in VMware Environments

A downloadable virtual appliance, VKernel's Capacity Bottleneck Analyzer is a capacity resource monitoring tool specifically for VMware ESX environments. After downloading and importing the appliance into ESX, the product provides a dashboard summary of current CPU, memory, and storage capacity utilization against VMware hosts, clusters, and resource pools. The vendor notes that the product auto synchronizes with Virtual Center to retrieve updated information regarding the clusters, pools, and folders; and is VMotion, DRS and HA aware.

The product's dashboard itself displays 5 main informational panels and is refreshed at 5 minute intervals. Alerting is also supported via SNMP or E-mail, with alert thresholds customizable.

Display panels include:

- Current capacity bottlenecks, which lists the top resources (pool, host, cluster), by the highest usage (in percentage) of storage, memory, or CPU. The usage statistic itself is color coded to indicate severity, and a trend arrow points upwards or downwards to reflect the direction of the usage.

- Future capacity bottlenecks, which analyzes usage and predicts potential resource problems in the future. This panel lists the number of predicted days within which the listed identity will run out of the indicated resource (memory, CPU, storage); and again is color coded by severity.

- Capacity Availability Map, which lists the sources and notes both how many total VMs are supported by them, as well as how many VMs are actually being used

- LUN Statistics, which display the available LUNs along with total and free capacity metrics

- Top Resource Consumers, which lists the top users in each of the three capacity categories with their actual composition and current usage (for example, total GB of storage or total MB of memory).

Capacity Bottleneck Analyzer is offered in Standard and Enterprise versions (the Enterprise version requires an Oracle or MS SQL DB and ships with an SDK), and a free 14-day trial is also available. Pricing starts at $199/socket.
