Power Save

Centrally Manage Workstation Power Management Features

Power Save allows system administrators to fine tune the power management settings of the individual workstations of their organization. With Power Save, admins can define power management features--including turning off the monitor, or placing the computer itself into standby or hibernate node or shutting down the computer--based on CPU, disk, keyboard, mouse, or application activity (power management actions can be blocked when a specific application is running). The workstation's own power management settings can be disabled and overridden by Power Save.

The product is centrally managed and deployed via the vendor's Core Console component, with features including the ability to group workstations. Power Save is available for both PC (Windows 2000/XP/Vista) and Mac (OS X 10.3/10.4/10.5) computers; but note that the features may not be completely identical between the two versions (see the vendor's site for current details).

With Power Save, Wake-on-LAN, shutdown, or restarts can be scheduled; as can the configuration updates themselves. A temporary window can be defined wherein the product will not automatically enforce its defined policies; and Power Save additionally recognizes the vendor's Deep Freeze (a separate product) maintenance schedules.

In addition to deployment and management, the Core Console provides power consumption and saving reporting, as well; based on the organization's electricity cost. New in the latest release of the Windows version of Power Save is an audit-mode, wherein the component can be deployed to a workstation and monitor PC usage without actually activating its own power management features. The product can then be activated via a central command if and when appropriate.

Other new features in the latest Power Save Windows release include the aforementioned configuration update scheduling, 64-bit support, and reporting enhancements.

Power Save is available now. Pricing starts at $14.40 with education and volume discounts available.
