SmartMetric Biometric Card

Credit-Card Sized Devices Store Personal Info, Cash

The SmartMetric product line is based on their biometric-enabled device, which is about the size of a credit card and can store a user's personal information--such as credit card numbers, contact information, etc.--and/or digital cash for use with online purchasing, security screening (proof of identity before entering a building, or logging into a system, for example), or digital funds transfers from card to card.

The key feature of the card is its biometric capabilities. Built into the card itself is a fingerprint reader that enables the data/cash the card contains to be locked and inaccessible until the owner's fingerprint is scanned. The vendor states that all the information that is required to authenticate the individual based on their fingerprint is stored directly within the card itself--no central fingerprint repository or database is required for individual user authentications.

Both contact and contactless versions of the card are expected to be offered: the contact version would be directly inserted into a receiving card reader that would then read the user's information (or access digital cash stores); while the contactless version would transmit the information from the card via RF transmissions to a receiving security desk or access station. In both cases, the information would only be provided if the user first authenticated themselves to the card by scanning their fingerprint.

The vendor states that the card consists of better than 150 active/passive components mounted on four layers of tissue paper-thin circuit boards; and has now reached a product design enabling the production of a minimum of 1 million cards a month.
