Install What You Need with Windows Server 2008
Windows Server 2008 is Microsofts most full-featured server operating system yet, so it's ironic that one of its most exciting new features is an install option that cuts out most of the other features. Paul Rubens explores why a Server Core installation makes a great deal of sense in many instances. »

M-Tech Identity Management Suite

User Identity and Password Management and Synchronization

The M-Tech Identity Management Suite (IDM Suite) consists of multiple components targeted to the provisioning and management of user identities on the network. Though the key core components of the platform (ID-Synch and P-Synch) run on Web-enabled Windows 2000/2003 servers, the platform ships with built-in connectors allowing it to interface and interact with multiple other systems, including UNIX and mainframes. The platform achieves this interactivity through support for open communications standards such as SOAP, which enable it to manage passwords and identities on disparate systems without requiring additional software on the target systems themselves. The vendor does note, however, that local agents are provided and recommended for UNIX servers and OS/390 mainframes; and local agents are required for interfacing with RSA SecurID servers. Primary access to the core IDM suite components is via Web browser.

The IDM Suite backbone consists of the core offerings ID-Synch and P-Synch, with additional capabilities provided by the individual modules ID-Access, ID-Discover, ID-Telephony, and ID-Certify.

ID-Synch provides user provisioning tools for the creation, modification and deletion of complete user identities for network or application access. Features include access change workflow; role-based definitions and access; automated account creation/deactivation; and directory cleanup tools.

P-Synch provides both automated password synchronization capabilities to multiple target systems and applications, as well as self-service tools for end users and help desk personnel to reset passwords. P-Synch also provides policy-based password enforcement.

ID-Access exposes a Web interface to end users that allows them to request access to particular network resources.

ID-Discover is an account discovery tool that can be used in the build-up of a master user directory. It prompts users to enter their user id/password pairs and then builds a master directory of profiles.

ID-Telephony provides an IVR interface allowing users to connect, authenticate and reset their passwords by voice.

ID-Certify, the newest entry in the IDM Suite collection, is targeted primarily to managers/compliance officers and provides a means of auditing staff access rights. ID-Certify regularly prompts managers to review the access rights of their staff, providing a digital dashboard interface that enables them to see the status of each of their subordinates. They check to see that all are appropriate; automatically sending authorization change requests to appropriate personnel as needed. They then digitally "sign" the review as accurate

The M-Tech IDM Suite is available now; the ID-Cerify component is expected to be available at the beginning of November. Visit the M-Tech Information Technology Website for further information.
