Magellan

Hardened Appliance Detects IP-Enabled Devices

Part of Sygate's "Continuous Protection" collection of products (which also includes their primary offering Sygate Secure Enterprise and Sygate On-Demand, which was formerly known as Sygate Security Portal), Sygate Magellan is a hardened appliance offering that is able to detect and discover "any network attached, IP addressable" device on a network. Once detected, the other Sygate offerings can be utilized to ensure that the device is in proper compliance with corporate security policies.

In addition to identifying the devices themselves, Magellan is able to identify and report key asset information pertaining to the devices found. Utilizing a proprietary discovery methodology that utilizes Level I through Level IV probes, administrators can use Magellan to report such device metrics as basic IP address and MAC address information, NetBIOS and domain names, open ports, active services, SNMP MIB info, and a guess based on the NMAP fingerprint database to detect OS information on Wireless Access Points (e.g. Linksys BEF* series) as well as Windows and Unix systems.

Magellan utilized three primary components to carry out its duties: Multiple discovery engines that provide the ability to detect devices on the network; a correlation engine that aggregates the information collected by the probes; and a Java-based user interface that can be utilized to view the resulting reports. Magellan manages a database of information pertaining to devices discovered, and tracks changes to device configurations (and presence) over time. Access to this data can be achieved via a provided analysis tool within the Java user interface, or via external access via DB-enabled report writers. Data export is also supported.

Sygate Magellan is expected to be available within the next 30 days, with pricing starting at $10,000. Contact Sygate for further information.
