LastBit Software offers a line of separately available password recovery utilities for individual applications (Acrobat, MS Access, Outlook, etc.). Among their current offerings:
- PDF password is a utility to recover lost passwords to password-protected PDF files. PDF Password recovers user and permission passwords only. The vendor states that PDF Password does not allow you to break the DRM (Digital Rights Management) system. The recovery methods used by PDF Password include: Brute Force Attack, Dictionary Attack, Smart Force Attack, Password Variation, Reset password (only if user password is either not set, or already known). The vendor warns that, due to the nature of the encryption method used in PDF files, the password search is very slow. The brute force speed is usually under one thousand passwords per second even on a top-speed modern PC. - Access Password is a password recovery utility for MS Access. It can recover both database and user passwords. All MS Access versions are supported (Access 2.0 through Access 2003). Using Access Password, you can recover passwords for any Jet-based databases, not only Access databases. To recover a database password, select the database itself (.mdb or .mde file). To recover user passwords, select the system database (.mda file- old Access 2.0 or .mdw file - modern versions). The vendor notes that the system database is required to retrieve a user password; if the system database is lost, there is no way to recover user passwords. Access Password can automatically find the currently registered system database. - Outlook Password is a password recovery tool for Outlook personal folders (.pst and .ost files). The vendor states that any password can be recovered instantly using the Fake Password Creation recovery method. The program interface is Web-like, no professional expertise is required for setting up and using the program. In automatic mode, you can recover a document in a few mouse clicks. Outlook Password supports all MS Outlook versions. - PowerPoint Password is a password recovery tool for *.ppt and *.pps files. PowerPoint Password uses various recovery methods: Plain Dictionary and Hybrid Dictionary attacks, Brute-Force attacks, and Smart-Force (TM) attacks (this dramatically speeds up Brute-Force attacks by skipping password checks of nonsense character combinations). An Automatic Mode is also available. - Quicken Password allows for the potential recovery of both file and transaction passwords. According to the vendor, unless your document was created in an old Quicken (prior 2001), recovering the file password requires "universal recovery methods," (Brute Force Attack, Dictionary Search and Smart Force Attack); and the vendor further notes that even a single password check takes a lot of computations, so the search speed will be very slow (not more than 1000 attempted passwords per second). If the file password can be recovered, the transaction password is then replaced with a fake password. The vendor also provides a Guaranteed Recovery Service for Quicken, which uses multiple computers (equal to spending 6+ months of computations on a single computer). - QuickBooks Password recovers lost or forgotten passwords to password-protected QuickBooks files (*.qbw, *.qba). Brute force attacks or dictionary searches are required to find the password, which may take a lot of time if the password is long and complex. It is possible to reset the password to a known one; which can be done instantly and you can open your document immediately. However the original password will remain unknown. The recovery methods used by QuickBooks Password are Brute Force Attack , Dictionary Attack Smart Force Attack, Password Variation, Reset password. - VBA Password is able to recover password-protected VBA modules existing in Access, Word and Excel documents and, according to the vendor, supports universal VBA password recovery that works with any application that uses VBA. VBA Password has two recovery engines: one is designed for Word, Excel and MS Access documents. It supports all Word and Excel versions and Access XP/2003. Another method is a universal recovery method that allows recovering password-protected VBA modules in any application. The recovery engine is capable of recovering any password instantly in documents created in Office through version 97. To recover passwords in Office 2000/XP documents, a brute-force attack is used; however, password resets are also possible. - Find Password Protected Documents analyzes Word, Excel documents (password to open), Access databases (share level passwords), Outlook PST, OneNote, PowerPoint, MS Money files and Zip archives. It then generates HTML and XML reports with a list of discovered password protected files and appropriate password recovery methods. Targeted usage includes security admins seeking to enforce password protection policy, etc. - With Word Password (for Word documents), the vendor boasts Guaranteed Recovery and Express Recovery features. According to the vendor, Express Recovery allows most password protected Word documents to be unlocked instantly. Word Password also supports a number of other recovery methods: Instant Password Extraction (does not require any processing; old Word versions), Brute Force Attack (potentially unlimited processing required; any password), Dictionary Attack (can crack password only if it is similar to a natural word), Smart Force Attack (a mix of Brute Force and Dictionary cracking methods; tries only natural combinations of letters), and Password Variation (works if you remember at least a part of your password). - Zip Password is able to recover lost or forgotten passwords to pkzip/WinZip archives. Brute Force Attack, Smart Force Attack and Dictionary Search are used to find the password. Zip Password features a search speed of up to 3,000,000,000 passwords per minute (over 50,000,000 passwords per second). Zip Password features support for "Known Plain Text Attack," which means that if you have a plain unencrypted copy of any file from the archive, you can decrypt the entire archive within 24 hours regardless of the password length. Zip Password is able to handle archives containing only one encrypted file. ZIP files created by various software packages in all compression modes are supported, as are self-extracting archives. You can interrupt the program at any time and resume the recovery process later. - WinPassword (formerly known as NT Password) is an application for NT / 2000 / XP / 2003 system administrators for finding breaches in system security. It tries to recover plain-text passwords analyzing user password hashes. WinPassword can also be used to recover lost passwords of particular users. The vendor targets the program to advanced users and system administrators with good understanding of the NT security model. WinPassword uses both traditional recovery methods (Brute Force Attack, Dictionary Search) and "Smart Table Recovery." Smart Table Recovery is based on precomputed recovery tables (rainbow tables); the vendor states that it's especially useful for recovering 7 character passwords containing punctuation marks and other non-alphanumeric characters. - Using WebPassword (HTML Password Protector), a Web page or a Web site owner or Webmaster is able to protect his HTML page with a password. WebPassword features one-window wizard-type dialog interface with drag-and-drop support implemented. WebPassword uses a crypto algorithm. The vendor states that all major browsers, including Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer and Opera, are supported. WebPassword supports all hosting types. No special support on the server side required; works with any standard server. WebPassword supports File Transfer Protocol; all processed pages can be uploaded to server via FTP. product submission by Company Rep Suggest a link
