McAfee Total Protection

Manage Endpoint Security via a Central Console

The McAfee Total Protection platform provides for the centralized security management of multiple PC endpoints. Security capabilities of the platform are based on and leverage multiple McAfee signature technologies, including anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware, network access control, and more.

The platform is now served in three general flavors: Enterprise, Small Business, and the new Total Protection for Data offering. Each of the Enterprise and Small Business offerings are further subdivided into standard and Advanced versions.

The Small Business Edition is targeted to organizations with fewer than 100 employees and is hosted by McAfee; customers access their Web-based SecurityCenter through the Web for the configuration and management of desktop components that provide protection including desktop and file server anti-virus, desktop anti-spyware, and desktop firewall controls. These endpoint components are installed to the endpoints via an online installation (users are sent a link that they can connect to and install the software--IE5.5 or later is required), with security updates then provided automatically and payment via annual subscription. The central console itself offers configuration, reports, updates and group management features.

The Small Business-Advanced version of the platform extends the Small Business version to include E-mail anti-spam and anti-virus services and/or E-mail server anti-virus protection. The E-mail server protection requires that the customer own their own unique mail server domain name and a mail server with a static IP address.

The Enterprise version of the product is targeted to organizations with 100 or more employees, and is built around McAfee's ePolicy Orchestrator offering, which provides the central management, reporting, and configuration console for the platform's capabilities. Those capabilities include desktop and file server anti-virus scanning, desktop anti-spyware, desktop host intrusion prevention including a combination of both signature and behavioral analysis, desktop firewall, and E-mail server-based anti-virus and anti-spam filtering. The Enterprise-Advanced version of Total Protection (targeted to organizations with 250 or more employees) adds Network Access Control features, limiting network access to only those endpoints that comply with defined security postures. The Total Protection Enterprise and Total Protection Enterprise Advanced products utilize or leverage the technology of multiple McAfee offerings, including ePO, Alert Manager, VirusScan Enterprise, AntiSpyware Enterprise Module, GroupShield for Exchange/Domino, Host Intrusion Prevention, Policy Enforcer, SpamKiller, and others.

New to the Total Protection product family is Total Protection for Data, which focuses on the prevention of data leaks from endpoint PCs as well as the ability to encrypt data on end points. Data loss prevention features include the ability to control end-user usages of sensitive data (including printing or sending via multiple methods, such as E-mail, Webmail, P2P apps, FTP, etc.), with the vendor noting that data is protected even when modified, copied, pasted, compressed, or encrypted; and encryption capabilities include support for whole-disk encryption (including two-factor authentication) with support for multiple encryption algorithms including AES-256 and RC5-1024; as well as persistent file and folder encryption in which a file header is attached to the file enabling it to remain encrypted even when saved in an alternate location or sent as an E-mail attachment. Like the Enterprise version, Total Protection for Data features integration with ePolicy Orchestrator (some integration is provided initially, with full integration planned by the end of the year), which provides a centralized management and reporting point (including auditing of data transactions, including sender, recipient, timestamp, data evidence, etc.).

The Total Protection product family is available now. Pricing for the new Total Protection for Data offering is set at $80/seat for 1,000 nodes.
